About This Place

Nestled at an altitude of 2,084 metres in the Kumaon hills of Uttarakhand, Nainital wraps itself around a kidney-shaped glacial lake whose still waters mirror the forested ridges above. The town is one of those rare places where the pace of life genuinely slows — boats glide silently across Naini Lake, and the only urgency comes from the mist deciding whether to lift or linger.

The surrounding hills — Naina, Deopata, Ayarpata, Sher-ka-Danda — form a protective amphitheatre that gives the valley its distinctive microclimate. A ropeway climbs to Snow View Point, where on clear days the snow-capped peaks of Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Nanda Kot appear impossibly close.

What stays with you long after leaving is less the postcard scenery and more the quality of the light in the late afternoon, when the lake turns the colour of hammered copper and the sounds of the bazaar drift up from the mall road below.
